About Itabira

Itabira's name is usually explained as Tupi for a stone that shines, and the stone here is iron. Gold seekers settled under the glittering Pico do Cauê around 1720, and in 1942 the town became the cradle of the mining company now called Vale. Decades of open-pit mining have since cut the famous peak down by roughly 150 metres, and the mines still dominate the skyline.

For most Brazilians, though, Itabira means Carlos Drummond de Andrade. The modernist poet was born here in 1902 and kept returning to the town, its mountain and its mines in his verse. Itabira answers with a hilltop memorial designed by Oscar Niemeyer, his childhood house in the old center, and poems set into plaques around the streets on the Caminhos Drummondianos route.

The hilly center has a rebuilt Rosário cathedral and steep cobbled lanes, while the wider municipality climbs toward the Serra do Espinhaço. The Ipoema district has waterfalls, a museum of the mule drivers who once crossed Minas Gerais and the Mata do Limoeiro State Park. The Winter Festival fills the town with free shows every June or July.
