About Córdoba

Córdoba is Argentina's university city, nicknamed La Docta, the learned one, for a university founded by the Jesuits in 1613. Tens of thousands of students give Argentina's second-largest city a young, lively feel, and its colonial core holds the finest Jesuit architecture in the country, alongside bohemian bars, music halls and a famous love of fernet with cola.

The city was founded in 1573 by Jerónimo Luis de Cabrera, and the Jesuits made it the headquarters of their vast Province of Paraguay. Their Manzana Jesuítica, a block with a church, a college and the old university, is listed by UNESCO together with the Jesuit estancias of the surrounding province. Around Plaza San Martín the cathedral and the arcaded Cabildo recall the colonial town, while former palaces and a converted prison now hold museums and cultural centres.

Ingeniero Ambrosio Taravella International Airport has flights to Buenos Aires and beyond, and long-distance buses fan out across Argentina. The Sierras de Córdoba, with their hill towns and rivers, begin just west of the city.
