Hammond is a city of about 77,000 people in the far northwest corner of Indiana, on the Illinois state line and the shore of Lake Michigan, just 25 miles from downtown Chicago. It grew around a meatpacking plant in the 1870s and then as a steel and manufacturing town, drawing immigrants from across Europe whose churches still stand in its neighborhoods.
Historic districts along Hohman Avenue and State Street preserve early 1900s commercial buildings, while neighborhoods like Forest-Ivanhoe and Indi-Illi Park have handsome homes from the same era. The Byzantine Catholic Pro-Cathedral of St. Michael and several Orthodox churches reflect the city's Eastern European roots.
On the lakefront, Wolf Lake Memorial Park has trails, fishing, a pavilion and a regional dog park, and the Hammond Marina and Lost Marsh Golf Course sit on reclaimed industrial land. The Horseshoe Hammond casino draws Chicago-area visitors, and the city is the home of the late Jean Shepherd, whose stories inspired the film A Christmas Story.
