About Elmhurst

Elmhurst is a city of about 45,000 people in DuPage County, about 16 miles west of downtown Chicago. Settled in the 1830s and first called Cottage Hill, it took its present name in 1869, inspired by the elm trees planted by early residents, and grew as a commuter suburb along the railroad into Chicago.

The city has a walkable, lively downtown around the Metra station, with shops, restaurants and the restored 1924 York Theatre. Wilder Park, a short walk away, holds the Elmhurst Art Museum, whose campus includes the McCormick House designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, along with a 1920s conservatory and greenhouse gardens. The Elmhurst History Museum occupies a Victorian mansion nearby.

Architecture fans can also see the Frank B. Henderson House, an early Prairie-style home by Frank Lloyd Wright. Elmhurst University, founded in 1871, has a leafy campus that doubles as an arboretum, and parks such as Eldridge Park add green space for walks and picnics.

Best seasonMay to October for parks and gardens; December for holiday lights downtown.
Ideal stayA half day to a day, easily combined with a Chicago trip.
ArrivingMetra's Union Pacific West line runs from downtown Chicago in about 30 minutes; O'Hare Airport is about 15 minutes away by car.
