About Lake Bled

Lake Bled sits at the foot of the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, a glacial lake with a tiny island and a medieval castle perched on a cliff above the shore. The setting has attracted visitors since the nineteenth century, when it became a health resort, and the town of Bled now serves as a gateway to Triglav National Park.

The traditional way to reach Bled Island is aboard a pletna, a wooden boat rowed by a standing oarsman. On the island, a stairway leads up to the Church of the Assumption, where visitors ring a bell for good luck. Bled Castle, one of Slovenia's oldest, offers views over the lake and museum exhibits. A path circles the lake, an easy walk of an hour or two. For higher views, short climbs lead to Ojstrica and Mala Osojnica, which overlook the island, and Straža hill has a summer chairlift and toboggan run. Nearby, the Vintgar Gorge has wooden walkways above a rushing river, ending at Šum Falls. Lake Bohinj, a larger and more natural lake within the national park, is a short drive away, with a trail to Savica Falls.

Bled suits couples, families and active travelers wanting mountain scenery without a long trek. The local cream cake, kremšnita, is a classic treat. Summer is busy, while spring and fall are quieter, and winter can bring snow and quiet scenery.

Best seasonMay, June and September offer mild weather and fewer crowds than July and August.
Ideal stayTwo to three days covers the lake, Vintgar Gorge and a day at Lake Bohinj.
ArrivingLjubljana's airport is under an hour away, and trains and buses connect Bled with Ljubljana.
