About Kitakyushu

Kitakyushu is a port and industrial city at the northern tip of Kyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, facing Shimonoseki across the Kanmon Strait. It is famous for Kokura Castle, the restored harbor of Mojiko Retro, the wisteria tunnels of Kawachi Fujien and the Yahata steelworks, now a World Heritage Site.

The city was formed in 1963 by merging five cities, Moji, Kokura, Wakamatsu, Yahata and Tobata, around the old castle town of Kokura. Moji grew rich as a trading port and the railway gateway to Kyushu, while the state-run steelworks that opened at Yahata in 1901 made the area the cradle of Japan's heavy industry. Today, with about 900,000 people, it is the second-largest city on Kyushu after Fukuoka.

Start at Kokura Castle, then spend a day in Moji, walking under the strait to Honshu and back. In late April and May book ahead for the wisteria at Kawachi Fujien. Ride up Mount Sarakura for the night view, and hike the limestone grasslands of Hiraodai.

Best seasonLate April to mid-May for wisteria; October to November for autumn leaves
