About Ulsan

Ulsan is a metropolitan city on the south-east coast of South Korea, with over 1.1 million people, Busan to the south and Gyeongju to the north. The Taehwa River crosses the city from the mountains in the west and reaches the East Sea through Ulsan Bay, and the city was raised to metropolitan status in 1997.

People have lived here since the Paleolithic, and the Bangudae rock carvings record whale hunts thousands of years old. In the Silla period Ulsan was a port for Gyeongju, and in 1597 and 1598 it saw fierce sieges of a Japanese castle. Named a special industrial zone in 1962, it now has Hyundai's car plant, the largest in the world, and huge shipyards and refineries.

Visitors come for the World Heritage petroglyphs in Ulju, the bamboo forest of Taehwagang National Garden and the old magistrate's office and Confucian school. On the coast lie the rocks of Daewangam Park, Ulgi Lighthouse, the sunrise cape of Ganjeolgot and Ulsan Bridge.
