About Pohang

Pohang is the largest city in North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, home to about 499,000 people on the shores of Yeongil Bay at the mouth of the Hyeongsan River. Gwamegi, half-dried herring or saury, is its best-known specialty, and its coast runs out to Homigot, where crowds greet the first sunrise of each year.

Still a small fishing village in 1900, Pohang grew around a modern harbour built in 1930 and became a city in 1949. On 18 July 1950 UN forces landed here unopposed in the first large amphibious operation since World War II, and in 1968 the steel maker POSCO was founded, its works on the bay starting production in 1972.

Visitors today pair the sea at Yeongildae Beach and the walkable Space Walk sculpture with the old temple of Bogyeongsa and the waterfalls of Naeyeonsan above it. Jukdo Market and the old Japanese houses of Guryongpo show the fishing side of the city, and since 2015 KTX trains have run directly to Pohang Station.
