About Kagoshima

Kagoshima is the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture at the southern tip of Kyushu in Japan, a city on Kinko Bay famous for Sakurajima, the smoking volcano that rises just across the water from its centre. Ash from its eruptions sometimes dusts the streets, and residents treat the mountain as part of daily life.

For centuries this was the seat of the Shimazu clan, lords of the Satsuma domain. Francis Xavier landed here in 1549, and in the 19th century the domain built some of Japan's first Western-style factories, the Shuseikan, now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Satsuma men such as Saigo Takamori went on to lead the Meiji Restoration.

Visitors stroll the Shimazu garden of Sengan-en, climb Shiroyama hill for the classic view of the volcano and take the short ferry ride to walk across lava fields on Sakurajima. The covered arcades of Tenmonkan, the lively downtown, are the place to try local shochu, black pork and shirokuma shaved ice.

Best seasonOctober to May; summer winds often carry volcanic ash over the city
