About Daegu

Ringed by mountains in the south-east of the Korean peninsula, Daegu is known among Koreans for its scorching summers, its spicy food and its deep roots in traditional medicine. It is the country's fourth-largest city, yet it feels more down to earth than Seoul or Busan, with busy old markets, quiet church hills and temple-dotted peaks right on its edge.

For centuries Daegu was a provincial capital and trading centre, and its herbal medicine market, Yangnyeongsi, has been running since the Joseon dynasty. In the early 20th century missionaries built houses, schools and a cathedral on the hills around Cheongna, and the city played a part in the independence movement against colonial rule, recalled by the stairway where students once gathered.

Today visitors climb Palgongsan to the wishing Buddha of Gatbawi, browse Seomun Market's night stalls, walk the mural lane dedicated to singer Kim Kwang-seok and look out from Apsan Park or 83 Tower. Try makchang grilled tripe and fiery jjimgalbi, both Daegu favourites.
