About Jiangmen

Few cities have as many relatives abroad as Jiangmen. This prefecture on the western side of the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong is the ancestral home of a large share of the Chinese communities in North America, Southeast Asia and Australia, and the money and ideas those emigrants sent home shaped its towns, villages and dialect.

The central districts of Pengjiang, Jianghai and Xinhui sit along the Xijiang and its branches. Arcaded qilou shophouses line the old Changdi waterfront, and Xinhui is known for its sun-dried mandarin peel, chenpi, used in Cantonese cooking and medicine. History runs deep: the sea battle at Yamen in 1279 ended the Song dynasty, and the reformer Liang Qichao was born in a Xinhui village.

The most striking legacy of emigration lies in Kaiping, where fortified towers built by returning migrants mix Chinese and Western styles and are protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Add the giant banyan of Bird Paradise, the forested slopes of Guifeng Mountain and seaside hot springs, and the prefecture fills several days.
