About Jieyang

Jieyang is one of the three cities of the Chaoshan region in eastern Guangdong, sharing its Teochew dialect, tea habits and food with Shantou and Chaozhou next door. The old core, Rongcheng, sits where the branches of the Rong River wind across a flat, green plain, and it still keeps a dense cluster of temples, ancestral halls and a grand Confucian academy between its modern avenues.

The city's character is practical and craft-driven. Chaoshan woodcarving and ceramic roof inlay decorate its shrines, the village of Yangmei has built a nationwide trade on cutting and polishing jade, and the wider Chaoshan region is known across China for its painted-face Yingge dancers. Mornings start with gongfu tea, and evenings with beef hotpot or rice noodle soup.

Give the old town a full day on foot, then head out to the hills: the forested waterfalls of Huangmanzhai in Jiexi County are the best nature trip, while Shantou and Chaozhou are both close enough for an easy day out.

Best seasonOctober to April, when the subtropical heat and summer typhoon rains ease
Ideal stay2 days: one for the Rongcheng old town, one for Huangmanzhai or Yangmei
ArrivingJieyang Chaoshan International Airport and Chaoshan high-speed railway station both lie in Jieyang's Jiedong District
