About Foshan

Foshan is where Cantonese martial arts, lion dance and opera feel most at home. The city on the Pearl River Delta, right next to Guangzhou, is the hometown of the kung fu master Wong Fei-hung and closely linked with Ip Man, Bruce Lee's teacher, and both are honored inside its splendid Ancestral Temple. Today about nine and a half million people live across its districts.

For centuries Foshan was one of China's great craft towns, famous for iron casting, silk and ceramics. In Shiwan, the Nanfeng Ancient Kiln has been firing pottery since the Ming dynasty, and the city still makes much of the country's tiles and porcelain. Two of the four celebrated classical gardens of Guangdong, Liang's Garden and Qinghui Garden, are found here.

Shunde district, known across China for its cooking, is the place to try double-skin milk and fresh river fish. Foshan shares a metro network with Guangzhou, high-speed trains stop at Foshan West, and Guangzhou Baiyun airport is the nearest major gateway.
