About Zhongshan

Zhongshan carries the name of its most famous son: the city was called Xiangshan, or Fragrant Mountain, until 1925, when it was renamed in honor of Sun Yat-sen, founding father of the Republic of China, who was born in the village of Cuiheng. Today this prosperous city of about 4.4 million people lies on the west side of the Pearl River estuary, facing Shenzhen and Hong Kong across the water.

Sun's childhood home and the museum around it are the main pilgrimage, and the city center keeps a giant bronze statue of him in Sunwen Memorial Park. Sunwen West Road, lined with restored early 20th-century arcaded buildings, is the old commercial heart, and the 1608 Fufeng Pagoda stands on a hill nearby. A former shipyard has been turned into one of China's most celebrated landscape parks.

The green Wugui Hills rise to the city's highest point in the south, while local kitchens are known for roast pigeon, crisp grass carp and almond cookies. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge now links the city directly with Shenzhen.

Best seasonOctober to December, when days are sunny and dry; summers are hot, humid and stormy.
Ideal stayOne to two days for Cuiheng, the old town and a park or garden.
ArrivingIntercity trains link Zhongshan with Guangzhou and Zhuhai; Macau and Zhuhai airports are both within easy reach.
