About Dolomites

The Dolomites are a mountain range in northeastern Italy, spread across the Veneto, Trentino and South Tyrol, known for pale limestone spires, sheer walls and green high pastures. The rock glows pink and orange at sunrise and sunset, and the range is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. German and Ladin are spoken in many valleys alongside Italian, reflecting the region's mixed heritage.

The Tre Cime di Lavaredo, three massive towers, are circled by one of the best-known hikes in the Alps. Lago di Braies, a green lake beneath steep cliffs, draws crowds in summer, and Lago di Sorapis rewards a longer hike with milky turquoise water. Cortina d'Ampezzo is the stylish hub of the eastern Dolomites, close to the Cinque Torri and Lagazuoi, where First World War tunnels and trenches remain. In the west, Seceda's tilted ridge and the vast meadows of the Seiser Alm are reached by cable car, while Val di Funes frames tiny churches against jagged peaks. Lago di Carezza and the Marmolada, the range's highest peak with its glacier, round out the classic sights.

The region suits hikers in summer and skiers in winter, with a large network of lifts and mountain huts. Driving the high passes is scenic but busy, and public buses link many valleys. Late June to September is hiking season, while winter brings the Dolomiti Superski area to life.

Best seasonLate June to mid-September for hiking and open huts; December to March for skiing.
Ideal stayFive to seven days allows bases in two valleys and several major hikes.
ArrivingVenice and Innsbruck airports are common gateways; Bolzano has rail links, and a car helps between valleys.
