About Daejeon

Few Korean cities pair cutting-edge science with Confucian heritage as easily as Daejeon. Home to the research district of Daedeok Innopolis, the KAIST university and dozens of national laboratories, the city of about 1.5 million people in the centre of the country also keeps elegant wooden houses of Joseon scholars, wooded hills and a hot spring quarter.

Daejeon grew quickly after the railway arrived in the early 20th century and became a major junction between Seoul and the south. In 1993 it hosted an international expo, which left behind the Hanbit Tower, the Expo Bridge and a cluster of museums, gardens and science attractions along the Gapcheon stream that still form the city's leisure heart.

Spend a day around the expo grounds and Hanbat Arboretum, then visit Uam Historic Park and Dongchundang House for a glimpse of the 17th century. Soak your feet in Yuseong's free hot spring baths, walk the barefoot trail on Gyejoksan and queue for fried soboro bread at Sungsimdang.
