West Bend takes its name from a sweeping curve of the Milwaukee River, and the river still shapes the town, with a riverwalk threading through downtown past shops, sculptures and parks. The Washington County seat lies about 35 miles northwest of Milwaukee, on the edge of the glacial hills of the Kettle Moraine.
The town grew as a mill and manufacturing center, best remembered for the West Bend Company and its kitchen appliances. Its handsome 1889 courthouse and old jail now form a county history museum, and the Museum of Wisconsin Art fills a striking wedge-shaped building on the river with works by the state's artists. In the old village of Barton, Gadow's Mill recalls the age of water power.
Just outside town, Lizard Mound County Park protects some of the best-preserved effigy mounds in Wisconsin. To the south, Pike Lake and Powder Hill in the Kettle Moraine State Forest offer swimming, hiking and a lookout tower, and the twin spires of Holy Hill rise above the forest.
Known as MOWA, this museum is devoted to artists from Wisconsin, from 19th century landscapes to contemporary work, shown in a modern wedge-shaped building beside the Milwaukee River. Changing exhibitions, a family art space and riverfront grounds make it an easy half day. Check the website for current shows and events.
Run by the Washington County Historical Society, this museum fills the 1889 Romanesque Revival courthouse and the adjoining 1886 jail. Exhibits cover county history, local industries and early settlers, and visitors can step inside the old cell blocks. Its research center helps family historians trace their roots.
A few miles northeast of West Bend, this county park protects a group of effigy mounds built roughly 1,000 to 1,500 years ago, shaped like birds, panthers and the lizard-like figure that gives the park its name. A self-guided trail with signs loops among the low grassy forms. Stay on the path to protect the mounds.
Standing beside the Milwaukee River in the historic Barton neighborhood, this old gristmill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its sturdy walls recall the era when water power drove the local economy and farmers hauled grain here. View it from the riverside and continue on a walk through Barton.
Once a separate village founded around a mill site on the Milwaukee River, Barton was later absorbed into West Bend and keeps its 19th century houses, churches and commercial buildings. Its quiet streets make for an easy walking loop with Gadow's Mill as a centerpiece. Combine it with a stop at nearby riverside parks.
Main Street's brick storefronts from the late 19th and early 20th centuries hold cafes, restaurants, antique shops and boutiques. The downtown connects to the riverwalk and a collection of outdoor sculptures. Summer brings a farmers market and evening music, so a weekend visit offers the most activity.
This walking path follows the Milwaukee River through downtown, linking parks, plazas, public art and the Museum of Wisconsin Art. It is an easy, flat stroll with benches and river views, and it connects to longer trails beyond town. Good at sunset and in autumn when the riverside trees turn color.
West Bend's largest city park stretches along the Milwaukee River with picnic shelters, playgrounds, sports fields and walking trails. It is a hub for summer events and family outings, and the riverbanks attract anglers. Weekday mornings are quietest, while weekends bring games and gatherings.
South of West Bend, this state forest unit has a sandy swimming beach on Pike Lake, campgrounds and wooded trails, including a stretch of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Climb the observation tower on Powder Hill for views over the glacial landscape. A state park vehicle pass is required.
A city nature preserve on the west side with trails through wetlands, woods, restored prairie and around small ponds. Birders come for migrating warblers and waterfowl in spring and fall, and benches invite quiet stops. Paths can be muddy after rain, so wear waterproof shoes and bring binoculars.
Crowning one of the highest hills in southeastern Wisconsin, this neo-Romanesque basilica and national shrine of Mary is cared for by Discalced Carmelite friars. Visitors can climb the scenic tower in season for sweeping views of the Kettle Moraine, especially vivid in October. A cafe and gift shop are on site.
