About Fond du Lac

At the southern tip of Lake Winnebago, the largest lake entirely within Wisconsin, sits Fond du Lac, whose French name means bottom of the lake. Fur traders and Native American villages came first; by the late 1800s sawmills and railroads had turned it into a busy market town, and its downtown still shows off Victorian brick blocks and church spires.

The lakefront is the heart of summer life. Lakeside Park spreads along the shore with a white lighthouse you can climb, a carousel and boat launches, and each June it hosts Walleye Weekend, one of the largest free fishing festivals in the Midwest. In winter the lake freezes into a temporary village of shanties for the famous sturgeon spearing season.

History fans will find the Galloway House and Village, a Gothic cathedral filled with German woodcarving and an octagon-shaped house tied to the Underground Railroad. Beyond town, the Wild Goose State Trail runs south toward Horicon Marsh, and the hills of the Kettle Moraine rise to the southeast.

Best seasonJune to September for the lakefront and festivals; February for the sturgeon spearing season on the ice.
Ideal stayOne to two days, more if you add Horicon Marsh or the Kettle Moraine.
ArrivingAbout an hour north of Milwaukee on US 41; the nearest airline service is Appleton or Milwaukee.
