About Khabarovsk

Khabarovsk is the capital of Khabarovsk Krai in the Russian Far East, set on the high right bank of the Amur near its meeting with the Ussuri, about 30 kilometres from the Chinese border, and it is famous for its long riverside embankment and the giant bridge across the Amur. With about 617,000 people it is the largest city of the Russian Far East.

The city began in 1858 as the military post of Khabarovka, named after the 17th-century explorer Yerofey Khabarov, after the region passed to Russia under the Treaty of Aigun. It received town status in 1880 and its present name in 1893, and until 2018 it was the centre of the Far Eastern Federal District. Its climate swings from very cold winters to hot, humid summers.

The old centre lies along three parallel hills, with Muravyov-Amursky Street running along the middle one. Visitors walk the Nevelskoy Embankment and look out from the Amur Cliff, see the tall golden domes of the Transfiguration Cathedral, and visit the Grodekov Museum and the Far Eastern Art Museum. In summer, boats leave the river station for trips on the Amur.
