About Fukushima

Fukushima is the capital of Fukushima Prefecture, a city of about 276,000 people in the Fukushima Basin of the Nakadōri region, ringed by the Azuma Mountains to the west. The Tōhoku Shinkansen stops at Fukushima Station, and the city is known for its orchards and for the hot-spring towns on its outskirts.

The name is said to come from Fukushima Castle, renamed in the 1590s, and from 1702 the town was the seat of the Itakura lords of the Fukushima Domain. In the Meiji era it was made the prefectural capital, and in 1907 it became a city. The Tōhoku Main Line reached it in 1887, and the city's orchards now grow peaches, pears and apples.

Visitors come in April for the blossom of Hanamiyama Park and Mount Shinobu, drive the Bandai-Azuma Skyline past the crater of Mount Azuma-kofuji to Jōdodaira, and stay at the spa towns of Iizaka, Takayu and Tsuchiyu. In August the Waraji Festival carries a giant straw sandal through the streets.
