About Iloilo

Iloilo City is the regional center of Western Visayas, set on the southeastern coast of Panay across a narrow strait from the island of Guimaras. With about 474,000 people in 2024, it is the most populous city of the region, made up of former towns such as Jaro, Molo, La Paz and Arevalo.

The Spanish settled here in 1566, making it their second colonial center in the Philippines after Cebu, and a sugar boom later filled the city with grand ancestral houses. Around 1900 Iloilo was the second city of the islands and was known as the Queen City of the South, and today it is a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy famous for La Paz batchoy and pancit Molo.

Visitors come for the churches and plazas of Jaro and Molo, the old commercial street of Calle Real and the mansions of sugar families. The long river esplanade, the customs house museum and the ruins of an old Spanish fort fill out a stay, and every January the Dinagyang Festival brings huge crowds of dancers into the streets.
