About Angeles City

Angeles is a highly urbanized city in the province of Pampanga in Central Luzon, about 80 kilometers north of Manila. With about 483,000 people in 2024, it is the core of the Metro Clark area and borders the Clark Freeport Zone, the former American air base that is now a busy airport and economic zone.

The town began in 1796 as a settlement called Culiat, staked out by Don Angel Pantaleon de Miranda, and it became a separate town in 1829 under the name El Pueblo de los Angeles. From 1903 to 1991 the neighboring Clark Air Base was one of the largest American bases overseas, and the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991 marked the end of that era.

Today Angeles is billed as the culinary capital of the Philippines and is famous for Kapampangan cooking and above all for sizzling pork sisig. Visitors come for the domed Holy Rosary church, the Pamintuan Mansion and the old town hall museum in the heritage center, and for the parade grounds, cemetery and landmarks of old Clark.
