About Antipolo

Antipolo is the capital of Rizal province in the Calabarzon region of the Philippines, on the hills east of Metro Manila, and it is famous for its pilgrimage cathedral of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, the Hinulugang Taktak falls and its night views over the metropolis. About 914,000 people live in the city.

The name comes from the tipolo breadfruit tree. Franciscan missionaries came in 1578 and the Jesuits in 1591, and in 1626 Governor-General Juan Nino de Tabora brought from Mexico the dark wooden image of the Virgin that made the town a place of pilgrimage. Even the young Jose Rizal walked here with his father in 1868.

Today Antipolo is the most populous city of Calabarzon, and millions of pilgrims climb to the cathedral from May to July. Visitors also come for the cool hills, the Pinto Art Museum, mangoes, cashews and suman rice cakes, and for day trips to the forests of the Upper Marikina basin, the Masungi Georeserve and the oldest rock art in the country.
