About Galesburg

Galesburg is a city of about 30,000 people in Knox County, western Illinois, founded in 1837 by the Presbyterian minister George Washington Gale, who also established Knox College. Its abolitionist founders made it a station on the Underground Railroad, and in 1858 it hosted the fifth Lincoln-Douglas debate at Knox College's Old Main.

The railroad shaped the city. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad built major yards here, and Galesburg is still a busy rail hub served by Amtrak. The Galesburg Railroad Museum and the annual Railroad Days festival celebrate that heritage. The poet Carl Sandburg was born in Galesburg in 1878, and his three-room birthplace cottage is now a state historic site where his ashes rest beneath Remembrance Rock.

Downtown has brick streets, the restored 1916 Orpheum Theatre and the Seminary Street shopping district with independent shops and restaurants. Lake Storey Park offers lakeside recreation on the north side, and the surrounding prairie farmland and small towns of western Illinois are close by.

Best seasonMay to October; June brings Railroad Days and the warmest outdoor weather.
Ideal stayOne day for the Sandburg site, Knox College, the railroad museum and downtown.
ArrivingAmtrak trains from Chicago take about 3 to 4 hours; Peoria and the Quad Cities airports are about an hour away.
