About Sydney

Few cities are built around a view as spectacular as Sydney's. Its deep, winding harbor is framed by the white sails of the Opera House and the steel arch of the Harbour Bridge, and ferries criss-cross the water to beaches, bushland and waterfront suburbs. Australia's largest city, home to more than five million people, stands on the lands of the Gadigal and other Aboriginal peoples, and began as a British penal colony at Sydney Cove in 1788.

The Rocks keeps the sandstone lanes of the early colony, while the Royal Botanic Garden curves around Farm Cove toward Mrs Macquarie's Chair. Museums are strong too, from the Art Gallery of New South Wales and its new Sydney Modern building to the Australian Museum, the country's oldest.

Then there is the coast. Bondi's surf beach and ocean pool lead onto the cliff walk to Coogee, and the ferry to Manly is one of the best cheap rides anywhere. Seafood, brunch culture and harbor-side bars round out the days, and the Blue Mountains are an easy day trip west.

Best seasonSeptember to November and March to May for warm, settled weather; December to February is peak beach season.
Ideal stayFour to five days for the harbor, beaches, museums and a day trip.
ArrivingSydney Airport is about 10 km south of the city center, linked by train in under 15 minutes.
