About Serang

Serang is the capital of Banten province, Indonesia, in the north-west of Java, famous for Old Banten, the ruined capital of the Banten Sultanate on the city's coast. Its top sights are the Great Mosque of Banten and its minaret, Surosowan Palace, Kaibon Palace and Speelwijk Fort.

Old Banten was a 16th-century port city known for its pepper, and the sultanate reached its peak in the 17th century before conflicts with the Dutch East India Company led to its decline. Serang is often called the city of pious people, and it became a city separate from Serang Regency on 2 November 2007.

Serang had 692,101 residents at the 2020 census, and it hosts two major mosques, the Ats-Tsauroh Great Mosque and the Al-Bantani Grand Mosque. It is served by Serang Station and by the Tangerang to Merak toll road, and the nearest airport is Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, to the east near Jakarta.
