About Auckland

Auckland is a city built on fifty-odd volcanoes and squeezed between two harbours, so almost everywhere you go there is water in view and a grassy cone on the skyline. New Zealand's largest city is also its most diverse, with Māori, European, Pacific Island and Asian communities shaping its food, festivals and neighbourhoods.

The Waitematā Harbour is the city's front yard. Ferries leave the downtown terminal for Devonport, the volcanic island of Rangitoto and the vineyards and beaches of Waiheke, while the waterfront around the Viaduct and Wynyard Quarter fills with diners in the evening. Above it all rise the Sky Tower and the arching Harbour Bridge.

Inland, the Auckland War Memorial Museum on its domain hilltop tells the stories of Māori and Pacific peoples, and summits such as Maungawhau and Maungakiekie give sweeping views across the isthmus. An hour's drive west, the black-sand surf beaches of the Waitākere Ranges feel a world away from the city.

Best seasonDecember to March for summer beach weather; spring and autumn are milder and quieter
Ideal stay3-4 days, plus island day trips
ArrivingAuckland Airport is about 20 km south of the city centre, linked by bus and shuttle services
