About Perth

Perth enjoys more sunshine than any other Australian capital, and it shows: life here moves between the broad Swan River, the parklands of Kings Park and a string of white Indian Ocean beaches that turn gold at sunset. It is one of the most isolated big cities on earth, closer to Bali than to Sydney, and that distance has given it a relaxed, outdoorsy character of its own.

The Whadjuk Noongar people have lived around the river, which they call Derbarl Yerrigan, for tens of thousands of years. The British Swan River Colony was founded in 1829, and gold rushes later in the century brought wealth that still shows in the Perth Mint and the city's heritage buildings, alongside the gleaming towers of the mining boom.

Today visitors cycle among quokkas on Rottnest Island, picnic above the city in Kings Park, swim at Cottesloe and Scarborough and sip wine in the Swan Valley. The cultural centre in Northbridge holds the state museum and art gallery, and ferries cross the river from Elizabeth Quay.
