About Nanchong

Wide bends of the Jialing River define Nanchong, a large city in the hills of north-eastern Sichuan. Long known as a silk centre, it built its fortune on mulberry fields and reeling mills, and its old name of Shunqing survives in the name of the central district and in the city's beloved mutton rice noodles.

The area has produced some well-known figures. Chen Shou, the historian who wrote the Records of the Three Kingdoms, came from here and is remembered at the Wanjuan Tower on West Mountain, while Marshal Zhu De was born in Yilong County, where his former residence is now a memorial. In the city, riverside promenades and Beihu Park show how residents spend their evenings.

Outside the centre, the countryside rolls away in terraced hills. Lingyun Mountain offers forest walks and temple-dotted slopes, and Shengzhong Lake in Nanbu County is a vast reservoir prized by anglers. Nanchong also makes a natural stop on the road between Chengdu and the gorges of eastern Sichuan.
