About Wuhan

Where the Han River pours into the Yangtze, three historic towns grew up facing each other across the water: Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang. Joined into one city in the twentieth century, they form Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province and one of the great inland hubs of central China, home to more than ten million people.

Wuhan's past runs deep. The Wuchang Uprising of 1911 sparked the revolution that ended China's last imperial dynasty, and Hankou's riverfront still shows the stone banks and customs house of its treaty-port years. Above the river, the rebuilt Yellow Crane Tower honours one of the most celebrated poems of the Tang dynasty, while the Hubei Provincial Museum guards bronze bells and a sword that have survived for well over two thousand years.

Today the city mixes riverside parks, university campuses and the vast East Lake with busy food streets. Breakfast is a serious matter here: start the day with a bowl of hot dry noodles, then cross the Yangtze River Bridge on foot. In March, cherry blossoms fill Wuhan University and Moshan.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November; summers are famously hot and humid.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for the three historic towns, East Lake and the provincial museum.
ArrivingWuhan Tianhe International Airport serves the city, and Wuhan, Hankou and Wuchang stations link it to China's high-speed rail network.
