About Chiba

Chiba is the capital of Chiba Prefecture, a port city on Tokyo Bay about 40 km east of central Tokyo, famous for the Kasori Shell Mound, the world's longest suspended monorail and the Makuhari Messe convention center. It is home to about 980,000 people.

People have lived here since the Jōmon period, and about 120 of Japan's shell mounds lie within the city. In the Middle Ages it was the home ground of the samurai Chiba clan, whose guardian deity Myōken is still honored at Chiba Shrine. After the war, land reclaimed from Tokyo Bay brought factories, a busy port and the new business district of Makuhari, and in 1992 Chiba became a government-designated city.

Begin with the Jōmon mounds at Kasori and the castle hill of Inohana, then ride the hanging monorail to the zoo or the port. Climb Chiba Port Tower for the bay view, walk the pine-backed beach at Inage, and catch a game or a show in Makuhari. In early summer, see the ancient Ōga lotus bloom in Chiba Park.
