About Yokohama

Yokohama was a small fishing village until 1859, when it became one of the first Japanese ports opened to foreign trade. Merchants, missionaries and Chinese traders soon followed, and that cosmopolitan start still shapes the city: a lively Chinatown, Western-style houses on the Bluff and a waterfront built for strolling. Today it is Japan's second most populous city, home to about 3.7 million people.

The great earthquake of 1923 and wartime bombing destroyed much of the old port, and Yamashita Park was built on the rubble. Since the 1980s the old shipyards have become Minato Mirai 21, a district of towers, museums, a giant Ferris wheel and harborside promenades, while the red-brick customs warehouses now hold shops and events. Ramen and instant noodles both have museums here, a sign of how seriously the city takes its food.

Trains from central Tokyo reach Yokohama in around half an hour, and Haneda Airport is close by. Shinkansen services stop at Shin-Yokohama, making it an easy first or last night in Japan.
