About Kawagoe

Kawagoe is a city in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, about 30 minutes by train northwest of central Tokyo. It is known as Koedo, or Little Edo, because its old streets keep more of the look of Edo-period Tokyo than Tokyo itself.

Kawagoe Castle was built in 1457 by Ōta Dōkan and his father, and through the Edo period the town was a castle town guarding the north of the shogun's capital. Its merchants grew rich shipping goods to Edo by river, and after a great fire in 1893 they rebuilt their shops as kurazukuri, heavy clay-walled storehouses with black plaster fronts made to resist the flames.

Today the street of these storehouses, the wooden bell tower of Toki no Kane and the candy shops of Kashiya Yokocho draw large crowds, especially at weekends. Close by are Kita-in, a temple holding rooms moved from Edo Castle and more than 500 stone disciples of the Buddha, and the Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine, home of the great float festival held each October.

Best seasonLate March to early April for cherry blossoms; third weekend of October for the Kawagoe Festival
