About Jiangyin

Jiangyin guards a narrowing of the Yangtze where the great river squeezes between low hills, a position that made the town a fortress for centuries and now carries one of China's landmark suspension bridges. The name means south bank of the Jiang, the old name of the Yangtze, and its history is full of scholars: in the Qing dynasty Jiangyin was the seat of the official who supervised the imperial examinations for Jiangsu.

Today it is a wealthy county-level city within Wuxi, known for industry and for Huaxi, the village famous for its riches and its skyscraper. Behind the factories lies a lively old centre with a Confucian temple, restored official compounds and the former home of the Liu brothers, while the countryside holds the residence of Xu Xiake, the Ming-dynasty traveller whose diaries inspired China Tourism Day.

Jiangyin is an easy trip from Wuxi, Suzhou or Changzhou. Spend a day on the old town and the riverside, and another on Huaxi and the Xu Xiake home.
