About Penang

Penang is a Malaysian state centered on an island off the peninsula's northwest coast, joined to the mainland by two long bridges. The British founded George Town here in 1786 as a trading port, and Chinese, Malay, Indian and other communities left a rich mix of temples, mosques, clan houses and shophouses. George Town's historic core shares UNESCO World Heritage status with Malacca.

Walking George Town is the main pleasure. Armenian Street and the surrounding lanes are known for wall murals and wrought-iron caricatures, and Khoo Kongsi is an elaborately carved clan temple. The indigo Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion and the green Pinang Peranakan Mansion reveal how wealthy merchant families lived. Wooden houses on stilts line the clan jetties, still home to Chinese families. Along the Street of Harmony, a church, temples and a mosque stand within a few blocks, and Little India is fragrant with spices. Fort Cornwallis and the Esplanade recall the colonial era. Beyond the center, Kek Lok Si's pagoda rises above Air Itam, a funicular climbs Penang Hill for cooler air and views, and Penang National Park offers forest trails to quiet beaches.

Penang suits food lovers above all, since hawker dishes such as char kway teow and assam laksa are famous across Malaysia, as well as history and architecture enthusiasts. Batu Ferringhi is the main beach area.

Best seasonDecember through February tends to be drier, and Lunar New Year brings festive energy.
Ideal stayThree days covers George Town, Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si and plenty of hawker meals.
ArrivingPenang International Airport serves the island, and trains reach Butterworth on the mainland, with a ferry across.
