About Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital, began in the mid-nineteenth century as a tin-mining settlement where the Klang and Gombak rivers meet; its name means muddy confluence. Today it is a modern city of towers and highways in which Malay, Chinese and Indian communities shape the food, festivals and places of worship.

The Petronas Twin Towers, linked by a skybridge, rise above KLCC Park, and Menara Kuala Lumpur offers another lofty view, with KL Forest Eco Park and its canopy walk at its base. Bukit Bintang is the hub for shopping and nightlife. In the older center, Merdeka Square is where the Malayan flag was raised at independence in 1957, and Masjid Jamek stands at the meeting of the rivers. Petaling Street is the heart of Chinatown, with the restored lane of Kwai Chai Hong nearby, and Sri Mahamariamman Temple is among the city's oldest Hindu temples. The modernist National Mosque, Masjid Negara, sits close to the Islamic Arts Museum and the Perdana Botanical Gardens. Just north of the city, a long, brightly painted staircase climbs to the Hindu shrines inside the Batu Caves.

Kuala Lumpur suits food lovers, shoppers and travelers on a stopover. The climate is hot and humid year-round, with frequent afternoon storms. Rail lines reach most districts, and Malacca and the Cameron Highlands are popular side trips.

Best seasonAny month works, though June and July tend to be somewhat drier; showers occur year-round.
Ideal stayThree days covers the towers, the old center, Batu Caves and plenty of eating.
ArrivingKuala Lumpur International Airport is linked to the city by the KLIA Ekspres train.
