About Niamey

Niamey is the capital and largest city of Niger in West Africa, spread along the Niger River and known for its Grand Mosque, the National Museum Boubou Hama, busy markets and sunset pirogue rides. A small riverside village before French rule, it became the colonial capital in 1926 and is now home to more than a million people.

The centre is easy to explore: the National Museum mixes pavilions of crafts and archaeology with a small zoo and the remains of the famous Arbre du Ténéré, while the Grand Marché and Petit Marché sell everything from fabric to spices. Craftspeople at the Wadata Artisan Village work leather and silver, and Kennedy Bridge gives the classic view of the wide brown river.

Beyond the city, the potters of Boubon work upstream on the Niger, and the last wild West African giraffes roam the farmland around Kouré. The cool dry season from November to February is the most comfortable time to visit, before the heat builds from March. Check current travel advice before any trip outside the capital.
