About Lomé

Lomé is a rare capital that sits right on a national border: its western edge touches Ghana, and its long palm-fringed beach runs along the Gulf of Guinea. The capital of Togo is a relaxed, low-rise port city, busy with motorbike taxis, market women and the cargo traffic of one of West Africa's deep-water ports.

German colonists made Lomé the capital of their Togoland protectorate in the late nineteenth century, and their legacy survives in the twin-spired cathedral and the restored governor's palace, now the Palais de Lomé arts centre and park. The French period followed, and independence came in 1960, remembered by the monument at the heart of the city. Lomé is also known for its markets, from the wax-print cloth traders of the Grand Marché to the fetish market of Akodessewa, a window into vodun beliefs.

Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport lies north-east of the centre. Lake Togo and the historic village of Togoville are an easy day trip east along the coast.
