About Agadir

Agadir is the largest beach resort in Morocco, a city on the Atlantic coast at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, just north of the mouth of the Souss River, and the capital of the Souss-Massa region. It is famous for its long sandy bay, its mild winter sun and the hilltop kasbah of Agadir Oufella.

The Portuguese built a fort here in 1505, and in 1541 the Saadians drove them out and later crowned the hill with a kasbah. In 1911 the Agadir Crisis between France and Germany foreshadowed the First World War, and in 1960 an earthquake destroyed the city, which was rebuilt to strict seismic standards. Agadir is also known as a capital of Amazigh culture.

Visitors ride the cable car up to the kasbah, walk the promenade and the marina, bargain in Souk El Had and explore the craft village of the Medina d'Agadir. The surf beaches of Taghazout, the palms of Paradise Valley and the birdlife of Souss-Massa National Park are all close by.
