About Jalingo

Jalingo is the young capital of one of Nigeria's greenest states. The city became the seat of Taraba State government in 1991, when Gongola State was split into Adamawa and Taraba, and it has grown quickly since, drawing traders, students and civil servants from across the north-east.

Its roots are older. Jalingo grew up as a Fulani settlement in the era of the 19th-century jihad and is the seat of the Muri Emirate, so the emir's palace remains a focus of tradition and festivals. Fulfulde, Hausa, Mumuye and other languages are heard in the markets, and the food leans on local staples such as kunun gyada, zobo and fura da nono.

Most visitors come for business or pass through on the way to Taraba's natural highlights: the cool, grassy Mambilla Plateau and Gashaka-Gumti National Park, both long drives south. In town, a day is enough for the markets, the stadium and the palace grounds. Check current travel advice before planning a trip to the region.

Best seasonNovember to February, the dry season, for easier road travel
Ideal stay1 day in town, more for the plateau or the national park
ArrivingBy road from Yola, Gombe or Bauchi; Danbaba Danfulani Suntai Airport serves the city
