About Fez

Fez is the oldest of Morocco's imperial cities, founded in the late eighth and early ninth centuries and long regarded as the country's spiritual and intellectual center. Its old medina, Fez el-Bali, is one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world, a dense web of lanes, workshops, mosques and homes recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Craftsmanship here follows traditions passed down through generations.

Most visits start at Bab Bou Jeloud, the blue-tiled gate that leads into the medina's main streets. The Bou Inania Madrasa is a masterpiece of carved stucco, cedar and zellij tilework, and the smaller Al-Attarine Madrasa is equally refined. The Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University, founded in the ninth century, is often cited as one of the oldest continuously operating educational institutions, though non-Muslims can only glimpse inside. Nearby stands the Zawiya of Moulay Idris II, a revered shrine. From terraces above the Chouara Tannery, visitors watch hides being dyed in stone vats, and Place Seffarine rings with the sound of coppersmiths.

A local guide helps on a first day, since the medina is easy to get lost in. The Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts and Crafts and the Dar Batha museum offer quieter interludes. The grand gates of the Royal Palace lie in Fes el-Jdid, the newer medieval quarter.

Best seasonSpring and autumn offer comfortable temperatures for long walks through the medina.
Ideal stayTwo to three days covers the madrasas, tanneries and craft quarters with time to wander.
ArrivingFes-Saïss Airport serves the city, and trains connect Fez to Rabat, Casablanca and Tangier.
