About N'Djamena

N'Djamena is the capital and largest city of Chad, spread along the Chari River where it meets the Logone, with Kousseri in Cameroon just across the water. Travelers come for its grand squares and monuments, the King Faisal Grand Mosque, the Chad National Museum with its Toumai fossil casts, and blazing sunsets over the river.

Founded by the French at the start of the 20th century as the outpost of Fort-Lamy, the city took its present name in 1973, after a nearby Arabic village whose name means place of rest. Heavy fighting in 1979 and 1980 destroyed much of the center, including the cathedral, and the rebuilt city is now a busy crossroads of Arab and southern Chadian cultures.

Most sights lie close together downtown: Place de la Nation and its steel arch, Our Lady of Peace Cathedral, Place de l'Independance and the Grand Marche facing the mosque. Late December brings the Festival Dary, while the Chari riverbanks and the Taiwan Bridge offer the best evening views. Douguia, upriver to the north, makes an easy day out.
