About Cappadocia

Cappadocia is a historic region in central Anatolia where ancient volcanic eruptions left thick layers of soft rock, later sculpted by wind and water into cones, pillars and valleys. These formations, often called fairy chimneys, gave early communities a material they could carve, and over centuries people cut homes, churches, dovecotes and even entire underground cities into the stone. The landscape and its rock-cut sites are recognized by UNESCO.

At dawn, hot air balloons rise over Göreme and drift across the valleys, a sight that draws many visitors and is equally striking from the ground. The Göreme Open-Air Museum preserves Byzantine rock-cut churches with painted frescoes. Uçhisar Castle, a towering pinnacle riddled with chambers, offers broad views, and walks through Pigeon Valley, Love Valley and the Red and Rose Valleys lead past strange formations toward the village of Çavuşin. Paşabağ, also known as Monks Valley, has some of the most photographed chimneys, and Zelve is an abandoned cave settlement.

Hikers and photographers are well served here, along with travelers drawn to the novelty of staying in a cave hotel. Avanos, on the Kızılırmak River, has a long pottery tradition. The underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı reach several levels below ground. Balloon flights depend on calm weather and are sometimes canceled.

Best seasonSpring and autumn offer mild weather for hiking and generally reliable conditions for balloon flights.
Ideal stayThree days allows a balloon morning, two or three valley hikes and an underground city visit.
ArrivingKayseri and Nevşehir Kapadokya airports both serve the region, with domestic flights from Istanbul.
