About Phuket

Phuket is Thailand's largest island, set in the Andaman Sea off the country's southwest coast and linked to the mainland by bridge. Tin mining drew Chinese immigrants in the nineteenth century, and their legacy survives in the Sino-Portuguese shophouses of Phuket Town. Today tourism dominates, with resort beaches along the west coast and quieter bays in the south.

In Phuket Old Town, pastel shophouses along Thalang Road and Soi Romanee hold cafés and small museums, and Khao Rang viewpoint looks over the town. Wat Chalong is the island's most important Buddhist temple, and the white marble Big Buddha sits on a hilltop above the bays. Patong Beach is the busiest stretch of sand and the center of nightlife, while Kata and Karon feel calmer and suit families. Crowds gather at Promthep Cape for sunset, and Nai Harn and Rawai keep a more local character. Boat trips head into Phang Nga Bay, among limestone islands and sea caves, and out to the Phi Phi Islands, where visits to Maya Bay are managed to protect its recovering ecosystem.

Phuket suits beach lovers, families, divers and travelers who want resort comforts. The dry season, roughly November to April, brings calm seas, while the southwest monsoon later in the year makes west-coast waters rough. Choosing a base matters on an island this size, and Krabi and Khao Lak are nearby alternatives.

Best seasonNovember through April brings dry weather and calm seas for swimming and boat trips.
