About Kampala

Uganda's capital spreads across a crowd of green hills a few kilometres north of Lake Victoria, and almost every hill carries a landmark: an Anglican cathedral on Namirembe, a Catholic one on Lubaga, a huge mosque on Old Kampala, and the royal tombs of the Buganda kingdom at Kasubi. Between them the valleys fill with markets, minibus taxis and boda-boda motorbikes in a constant, good-humoured rush.

Kampala grew around the court of the Kabaka, the king of Buganda, and the kingdom's presence is still felt along the straight royal road that links its parliament, the Bulange, with the palace at Mengo. Colonial-era churches, Indian-built shopfronts on Kampala Road and modern towers in Nakasero tell the later chapters.

Give yourself time to ride up a hill or two for the views, eat a rolex from a street stall, and finish at the lakeshore in Ggaba with fresh tilapia. Entebbe, its botanical gardens and the airport lie about an hour south.

Best seasonJune to August and December to February, the drier months; rain falls in short bursts the rest of the year
Ideal stay2-3 days, plus side trips to Entebbe or Jinja
ArrivingEntebbe International Airport is about 40 km south, linked by the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway
