This guide covers the best places to visit in Duluth, from Canal Park and the harbor to the mansions and parks of the east side, plus the classic drive up the North Shore.
Few American cities give you such a close look at a working Great Lakes port. Ore boats and ocean-going ships move through the Duluth Ship Canal throughout the shipping season, and you can stand on the pier as they pass close enough to wave at the crew.
Duluth also has the bones of a prosperous lumber, mining and shipping city of the early twentieth century: stone mansions, a grand railroad depot and hillside parks laid out with views over the harbor.
Canal Park is Duluth's waterfront district, a walkable area of converted warehouses, shops, restaurants and lake views. Most first-time visitors start here.
The Aerial Lift Bridge is the city's signature landmark. Built in 1905 as a transporter bridge with a suspended gondola, it was converted in 1929 and 1930 into a lift bridge whose deck rises to let ships through the canal.
The Lakewalk is a paved and boardwalk path that runs along the shore from Canal Park toward the east side, passing the rose garden at Leif Erikson Park and rocky beaches along the way.

Beside the bridge, the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center tells the story of shipping on the lake through ship models, shipwreck exhibits and a working view of the canal.

Moored in the Minnesota Slip near the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center, the William A. Irvin is a retired lake freighter that served as the flagship of the U.S. Steel fleet.
Glensheen is a lakeshore estate completed in 1908 for mining and lumber magnate Chester Congdon. The house keeps much of its original furniture, and the grounds include formal gardens, a carriage house, a boathouse and a stream running down to the lake.

Enger Tower, a five-story stone observation tower dedicated in 1939, stands in Enger Park on the hillside above downtown. Climb the stairs for a sweeping view over the harbor, the lift bridge and the Wisconsin shore.

On the city's northeast edge, Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory is one of the best places in North America to watch the autumn raptor migration. From mid-August through the fall, thousands of hawks, eagles and falcons funnel along the lakeshore.
Cross the Aerial Lift Bridge and you are on Park Point, also known as Minnesota Point, one of the longest freshwater sandbars in the world.

On the harbor next to Bayfront Festival Park, the Great Lakes Aquarium is dedicated to freshwater life, with sturgeon, lake trout, river otters and exhibits on the Great Lakes watershed. It is a good choice for families and rainy days.

Duluth's historic Union Depot, a château-style stone station downtown, houses the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, with a large collection of locomotives and rail cars, including enormous steam engines from the Iron Range.

About an hour's drive northeast on Highway 61, Split Rock Lighthouse stands on a sheer cliff above Lake Superior. It was built after a ferocious 1905 storm wrecked many ships along the shore and was first lit in 1910.

Southwest of the city, Jay Cooke State Park protects a rugged stretch of the St. Louis River where tilted slate rock creates rapids and pools.

Lake Superior fish is the taste to seek out in Duluth. Look for walleye, lake trout, whitefish and herring, served fried, grilled or smoked.
Canal Park has the highest concentration of restaurants, including Grandma's Saloon and Grill, a long-standing local name that also lends its title to the city's famous June marathon. For a more local feel, head to the Lincoln Park Craft District in the West End, where breweries, distilleries and casual restaurants occupy old industrial buildings.
Popular dishes to try in Duluth
Canal Park suits first-time visitors who want to walk to the lift bridge, the Lakewalk and restaurants.
Downtown and the Fitger's area put you close to the Depot, theaters and the Lakewalk, with a slightly calmer feel.
The West End and Spirit Mountain area suit skiers, mountain bikers and anyone exploring the Lincoln Park Craft District or Jay Cooke State Park.
Where to stay in Duluth
Summer, from June to August, brings the warmest weather, long days and the busiest shipping traffic, though the lake keeps temperatures mild and fog is common.
Winter is long and cold, but Duluth embraces it with cross-country skiing, downhill runs at Spirit Mountain and Bentleyville Tour of Lights, a large free holiday light display at Bayfront Festival Park from late November through December.
Most visitors drive, taking Interstate 35 north from Minneapolis and St. Paul, a trip of about two and a half hours. Duluth International Airport, on the northwest edge of the city, has connections to major hubs.
Canal Park and downtown are walkable, and the Lakewalk links them with the east side.
Start in Canal Park with the Maritime Visitor Center and a walk out to the pier lighthouses.
Walk the Lakewalk east to Leif Erikson Park, then visit Glensheen. In the afternoon, drive up to Enger Tower and along Skyline Parkway, and finish with dinner in the Lincoln Park Craft District.
Drive Highway 61 up the North Shore, stopping at Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse, and return along the lake in the evening light.
