Schaumburg is a village of about 78,000 people in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, about 30 miles from the Loop. Settled by German farmers in the 1800s, it remained a small rural community until it incorporated in 1956, then grew explosively after Woodfield Mall opened in 1971 and major companies built headquarters nearby.
Today Schaumburg is one of the busiest shopping and entertainment destinations in the Midwest. Woodfield Mall is the largest shopping center in Illinois, and IKEA, LEGOLAND Discovery Center Chicago and Medieval Times all draw families from across the region. Baseball fans can watch the Schaumburg Boomers at Wintrust Field.
The village's farming roots are preserved at the Volkening Heritage Farm, a living history farm set within the Spring Valley Nature Center, with trails through woods, prairie and wetlands. Olde Schaumburg Centre keeps historic buildings, and the Prairie Center for the Arts hosts performances. Late summer brings the Septemberfest festival.
The largest shopping mall in Illinois, opened in 1971, with department stores, around 250 shops, restaurants and a food court on several levels. It is the anchor of Schaumburg's shopping district and draws visitors from across the Midwest. Weekday mornings are calmest; holiday weekends are very busy.
A very large IKEA store with furnished room displays, a marketplace of home goods, a restaurant serving Swedish meatballs and a supervised play area for children. Plan at least two hours to walk the showroom route. Weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit.
An indoor LEGO attraction aimed at children aged about three to ten, with a miniature Chicago skyline built from bricks, rides, a 4D cinema, play zones and building areas. Adults must come with a child. Book timed tickets online in advance, which is usually cheaper than buying at the door.
A dinner theater in a mock castle where guests eat a four-course meal while knights on horseback compete in jousting, swordplay and horsemanship. Each section cheers for its own knight. Shows run most evenings and weekend afternoons; book ahead and arrive early to see the stables.
The ballpark of the Schaumburg Boomers, an independent minor league baseball team, with affordable tickets, a kids' play area and frequent fireworks nights and promotions. It is a relaxed, family-friendly outing on summer evenings. Check the schedule for theme nights and fireworks.
A park district nature preserve of about 135 acres with trails and boardwalks through woods, prairie, marsh and around ponds, plus a nature center with exhibits and programs. Admission is free. It is an excellent place for birdwatching and spring wildflowers; dogs and bikes are not allowed on the trails.
A living history farm within Spring Valley that recreates German-American farm life in the 1880s, with a farmhouse, barns, gardens and heritage breed animals. Costumed interpreters do chores and invite visitors to help. Seasonal events include harvest days; check opening dates, as hours are seasonal.
The village's historic crossroads, where a few older buildings, a historic church and small parks recall the farming community that existed before suburban growth. It is a quiet contrast to the busy mall district. Stroll the area and stop at the village's restaurants and the nearby Town Square.
Schaumburg's performing arts center, with a theater hosting concerts, plays, dance, children's shows and community performances throughout the year. Tickets are usually affordable. Check the season calendar online for shows and pair a visit with dinner nearby.
Schaumburg's annual Labor Day weekend festival, with live music, carnival rides, food vendors, a parade and family activities. It is one of the largest community festivals in the northwest suburbs. Check the village website for dates and the music lineup, and use shuttles when available.
