About Pudong

Three decades ago the east bank of the Huangpu River was mostly farmland, warehouses and docks facing the grand facades of the Bund. In 1990 it was named a special development zone, and Pudong has since grown into the futuristic half of Shanghai, a district of more than five million people with the glass towers of Lujiazui, Shanghai's main international airport and Disneyland.

Pudong is more than its skyline, though. Beyond the financial district stretch Century Park and a cluster of museums, the former Expo 2010 grounds with the red China Pavilion, and further out old canal towns, wetlands and the round Dishui Lake near the sea. The world's first commercial maglev line links Longyang Road with Pudong Airport at speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour.

For visitors it makes a natural counterpart to the Bund: walk the Lujiazui riverside promenade, ride up the Jin Mao Tower or the Shanghai World Financial Center, explore the Museum of Art Pudong, and save a day for Disneyland or the quiet lanes of Xinchang.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November for pleasant weather; summers are hot and humid with heavy rain.
Ideal stayTwo days: one for Lujiazui's towers, river and museums, one for Disneyland, Century Park or Xinchang.
ArrivingShanghai Pudong International Airport is within the district; Metro Line 2 links it with Lujiazui, and the maglev runs to Longyang Road.
