About Kunshan

Between Shanghai and Suzhou, Kunshan has turned from a quiet county town of canals and rice fields into one of China's richest manufacturing cities, yet it still guards some of the loveliest water towns of the Yangtze delta. Zhouzhuang, with its arched stone bridges and merchant mansions reflected in the canals, is among the most famous of them all.

The area is also a cradle of Chinese culture. Kunqu, one of the oldest surviving forms of Chinese opera, takes its name from Kunshan, where its singing style was refined in the Ming dynasty, and the scholar Gu Yanwu was born in the canal town of Qiandeng. Jinxi, a quieter water town on a lake, adds small museums and Ming-era bridges.

In the city centre, Tinglin Park climbs a small hill known for Kunshan stone and the delicate qionghua flower. Autumn brings the famous hairy crabs of nearby Yangcheng Lake to local tables. Fast trains put Kunshan within easy reach of Shanghai and Suzhou for a day trip.

Best seasonApril to May and October to November, when canal walks are mild; autumn is crab season.
Ideal stayOne or two days for Zhouzhuang and another water town.
ArrivingKunshan South station is on the Shanghai to Nanjing high-speed line, minutes from Shanghai and Suzhou.
