About Glenview

Glenview is a village of about 48,000 people in Cook County, Illinois, about 17 miles north of downtown Chicago. It began as a farming settlement in the 1830s and grew into a leafy North Shore suburb. For much of the 20th century it was home to Naval Air Station Glenview, a major training base that closed in 1995.

The former air station has been redeveloped as The Glen, a planned neighborhood with a town center of shops and restaurants, the Kohl Children's Museum, Gallery Park with its lake and trails, and the restored Air Station Prairie. Elsewhere in the village, The Grove National Historic Landmark preserves the home and woods of 19th-century naturalist Robert Kennicott, and Wagner Farm keeps a working dairy farm open to visitors.

The James Woodworth Prairie Preserve protects a rare patch of original Illinois tallgrass prairie, and the North Branch Trail runs through forest preserves on the village's edge. Chicago, the Chicago Botanic Garden and Lake Michigan beaches are all a short drive away.

Best seasonMay to October for prairies, gardens and trails; the children's museum is open year-round.
Ideal stayOne day, or a quiet base for exploring Chicago and the North Shore.
ArrivingO'Hare International Airport is about 20 minutes southwest; Metra's Milwaukee District North Line stops in downtown Glenview.
